AboutBlurring Boundaries: A Modern Theater for Berlin Mitte

The area to be worked on in this thesis is located in a very heterogeneous district of Berlin Mitte. Our site posed many challenges: the six-lane intersection in front of us and the approximately 100m high residential building in the rear. The goal was to design a contemporary theater where performers and audiences can create a unique relationship with each other.

In our design, the idea begins with the audience entering the theater. The spectator is directly involved in the event and can get glimpses of the backstage area through the bull's eyes arranged at different heights.

In addition, we decided to choose completely flexible stage forms, depending on the play being performed. Almost everything is possible in the main and studio stages, from the time-honored proscenium stage to the traverse stage to a completely enclosing in-the-round stage. On warm summer nights, the studio stage can be transformed into an outdoor theater.

The direct multicultural milieu with the 'Russian Stage’ and the 'French Music School' should promote international exchange and collaborations. The building itself should show the message of blurring boundaries: The polycarbonate building envelope is translucent and gives a hint of the concrete functional core. In the evening, the solitaire with its luminous shell stands as an archetype for Modern Theater.
